have breaking news. we understand president obama is going to be addressing the nation from the white house just one hour from now on the fiscal cliff crisis. we're going to bring that to you live as soon as it happens, but we're looking at our watches here, our clocks. about 1:30 p.m. eastern the president will come out and address the nation regarding whether or not we're going over this fiscal cliff, the talks and negotiations taking place, the back and forth. we know the vice president as well as top republicans in the senate have been involved in talks throughout the evening and early into the morning. there's some sort of rough framework they're working with here, and we will hear from the president himself on the status of those talks. that is in about 45 minutes from you now. secretary of state hillary clinton is in the hospital for a blood clot. dr. sanjay gupta says the drugs that doctors are using are offering clues to where that clot is. been he was the front runner to be president obama's choice as secretary of defense. no announcement. the silence is deafening from the white house. but the opposition already mounting. a lot of criticism coming from both republicans and democrats about some of hagel's positions while he served in the senate. i have to tell you over the last several years he's been known as somewhat of an independent maverick. concerns about his position on iran, was he strong enough about iran being a terrorist state, about voting for sanctions against iran. but a lot of it folksing on his his position with israel. a remark he made back in 2007 about the "jewish lobby in washington." a lot of pro-israeli groups voting their concerns. i want to play you just now a bit of a commercial already running on television opposing hag hagel, even though he's not nominated. >> president obama says all options are on the table. hagel says military action is not a feasible option. president obama for secretary of defense chuck hagel is not a responsible option. >> but if the white house was thinking of nominatin
obama, you could argue. it makes sense that he's serving as the president's proxy. this is something the president is engaged with. this is something the white house is very engaged with. he said yesterday he's optimistic that a deal can be struck. i think that's not surprising. that's what you'd expect to come from president obama. but we're also -- we sort of said tonight is the deadline and that's true because a lot of the tax cuts expire at midnight. the sense we're getting from a lot of sources and from members of congress is that perhaps tonight isn't a hard and fast deadline. mitch mcconnell and the vice president are negotiating in earnest to find a deal. but it's sort of difficult to see how exactly that may come to be by midnight and have votes in the senate and house. the thought is that going over the cliff gives cover for some democrats and certainly some republicans. there will be a lot more pressure after the cliff comes to be to put a solution in place. even after midnight were to come and go, we would see them wo working towards an agreement, e we would expect. >> po
